Day Trips from Plakias

Not too strenuous explorations of Crete in high summer.

Frangokastelo is a Venetian castle built in 1370, one of a number of forts that were never used!
Frangokastelo

In front of the castle is the most fantastic, shallow bay, with fine, golden sand.
The Beach at Frangokastelo

Looking west from the sandy beach to the fishing harbour.

Frangokastelo Harbour

Fabulous building, not sure about the dead bird.
Bird at Bar in Frangokastelo

Perhaps not the coolest means of transport, but certainly a leisurely way of seeing the surrounding countryside.
The Noddy Train

One of the two villages above Plakias on the hillside. We visited Selia during our day out on the Noddy Train.
In Selia

Typical Greek beach! Another stop made by the Noddy Train.
Koraka Beach

The meeting of the Venetian with the Turkish in Rethymnon's old town.
Naraje Cami Minaret, Rethymnon

A classic Venetian courtyard glimpsed through a doorway in Rethymnon's old town, this one a restaurant.

Lions' head fountains in a shady square at the heart of hill town, Spili.

Spili Lion

An isolated beach, 45 minutes off the main highway, by way of white knuckle roads through copper green mountains.

Looking Back Down on Ligres

The Minoan palace at Faistos (1900 - 1400BC) in the auditorium for bull-leaping (tavrokathapsia)
Seats in the West Court of Faistos

Steps into the West Court at Faistos

12 steps, 13.5 metres wide and convex to add to the visual impact!
The Great Staircase at Faistos

Inhabited from Neolithic times, these caves are most famous, as my book puts it, for being &quotinhabited by the primitive hippies of the 60's!
Matala's Caves

The monks at Preveli played a key role in enabling allied troops to escape from Crete to Libya in WW2.
